DESCRIPTION
TraQ-A-Bat was developed in collaboration with Tiree as a low-cost solution for tracking bat activity, the prototype featuring a custom-designed wooden frame, precisely fitted to the bat box, both of which were designed in SolidWorks. This removable frame securely houses the device while allowing for easy installation, maintenance, and upgrades. The device itself can be easily maintained due to its securely fixed position within the frame, while a removable cap on the frame allows researchers to access internal components for battery replacement or modifications.
The system is powered by an Arduino-based software, programmed in C/C++, and integrates infrared sensors, a real-time clock (RTC) module, a Bluetooth module, and a temperature and humidity sensor. It operates using a solar-powered system that charges its batteries, ensuring continuous functionality without the need for frequent manual recharging. These components work together to detect and log bat entries and exits while also monitoring environmental conditions inside the bat box. The Bluetooth module allows for wireless data transfer without the need to physically access the bat box. Users can download a compatible app to send the following commands:
- ‘count’: Displays the current bat entry/exit count (transferred upon connection).
- ‘reset’: Resets the count.
- ‘inside’: Shows the number of bats currently inside the box.
- ‘temp’: Displays the current temperature and humidity inside the bat box.
- ‘SETTIME DD MM YYYY HH MM SS’: Sets the real-time clock for accurate data logging.
Designed for modularity, energy efficiency, and durability, TraQ-A-Bat ensures reliable long-term performance in outdoor conservation settings while providing researchers with valuable data on bat activity and habitat conditions.
