Project background

Chemistry is the science that involves analyzing a dynamic but largely invisible world, in which chemists strive to interpret, predict, and control molecular-level behaviour that leads to macroscopic (the things we can observe) and super macroscopic (beyond the visible) effects/impacts. Because chemistry is largely portrayed as a static subject (e.g., drawn on paper, shown on slides using multiple representations), students struggle to master key concepts in chemistry and often leave with a negative view of chemistry as a random and complex subject.

This project's goal is to create chemistry learning experiences to help students learn key dynamic, submicroscopic concepts. Ultimately, the effectiveness of these learning experiences will be evaluated. Essential features of the experience include scientific accuracy, usability in organic chemistry and biochemistry courses, etc and be an open education resource (CC-BY-NC-SA). Specific learning outcomes will be outlined that you will address with a VR experience. There are 4 scenarios that you could choose from to develop: Scale and time, molecules, proportions and micro/macroscopic events.
